I have recently (half-a-year-ago) made a visit to Thăng Long's four most sacred temples (Thăng Long is the ancient name of Hanoi). The whole tour to visit these temples cycles around Hanoi and is definitely recommended if you want to see the ancient spiritual side of the city.
Basically, there are four temples that are said to be holding four cardinal directions of the ancient capital for hundreds of years. In the directions of north, east, south, and west they are:

- Quán Thánh temple (on Thanh Niên x Phan Đình Phùng street) worshipping the pole star god Trấn Vũ. The temple were built in the 10th century.
- Bạch Mã temple (on Hàng Buồm street) worshipping Long Đỗ god who founded Thăng Long ancient city. The temple were built around the 9th century.
- Kim Liên temple (on Xã Đàn street) worshipping the mountainous god Cao Sơn. The temple were built in the 17th century.
- Thủ Lệ temple or Voi Phục temple (next to Thủ Lệ zoo) worshipping Linh Lang god - a prince in Lý dynasty. The temple were built around the 11th century.
